A Short Intro to Graphic Design

In essence, graphic design is the craft or ability to integrate text and photographs in advertising, magazines, or books.

New Graphic Design, also known as visual communication, communication design and commercial design, was born in the early 20th century. The Touchstone was produced in 1936 for the London Underground, considered a masterpiece of the industrial age. It used a typeface originally designed for Edward Johnston's project which is still in use today.

Germany's minimalist mid-century Bauhaus Style of Architecture brought sculpture to the next level and laid the foundation for today's graphic designers.

Of course, artists such as Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Adrian Frutiger, Milton Glaser, Alan Fletcher, Abram Games, Herb Lubalin, Neville Brody, David Carson and Peter Saville have brought graphic design to a whole new stage. Graphic design today plays a central role in trade, pop culture and many facets of contemporary life.

Graphic Production Systems

Look about you, man. Graphic design is everywhere from the candy bar wrappers to the branding on your favourite coffee mug. In reality, every day, you see hundreds of examples of graphic design, and most of the time, you don't know it.

Graphic design can fulfil a variety of purposes. Just a handful of the applications of graphic design include:

  • Signage

  • Corporate identity/branding

  • Packaging (from water bottles to appliances)

  • Printed materials (books, flyers, magazines, newspapers)

  • Online art (banners, blogs, websites)

  • Album covers

  • Film and television titles and graphics

  • T-shirt and clothing designs

  • Greeting cards

Designs will make things simpler or destructive

On certain times, such as billboard design, graphic design must have very simple and easy means of conveying information. The metro map of New York City is a perfect example of this. The interface simplifies something very complicated, making it easy to navigate to your destination. If the concept was too complicated or imaginative, it would obstruct the purpose of the map, making it useless.

In other ways, the architecture will go in the opposite direction. It could be jarring, hard to decipher or make a comment that takes a while to grasp. This is also used in album covers, as well as poster designs, greeting cards, and other ways of disruptive illustration.

Design in the Field of Digital

Graphic design and web design are gradually moving hand-in-hand. Magazines must have an online presence, and so do newspapers, grocery stores, hospitals, and other businesses and institutions. Graphic designers must also build and retain a cohesive look and feel across a wide spectrum of disciplines. Most of the time digital architecture directs how the rest of the identity is produced and implemented.

Graphic design isn't all pretty or pretty for the sake of it. It's a vital part of life and trade.

Five noteworthy graphic designers around the world

Without pointing to any of the greats of the industry, it is difficult to understand graphic design. While there are hundreds of talented designers over time the following five men have produced work that distinguishes the industry:

If you've ever seen the Hitchcock movie, you probably know the design skills of Saul Bass. His Northwest and Psycho work were remarkable, as were other works for directors such as Billy Wilder, Stanly Kubrick, and Otto Preminger. Bass is also responsible for some of the most famous logos in the history of the company, including Bell System, AT&T, Continental Airlines and United Airlines.

His Famous Works

Well known for his work on the IBM logo, Paul Rand (born Paul Rosenbaum) was an artistic powerhouse who gave many companies their name. Perhaps the most popular story on this was about late Steve Jobs and his business NeXT. Jobs approached Rand and asked for a slogan, asking him to come up with a range of choices. Rand said, "No I will solve your problem and you will pay me. You don't have to use the solution. If you want options, go talk to other people." Workers didn't talk to anyone and Rand paid $100,000 for his job.

Glaser is famous for two legendary graphic design pieces: the I ❤ NY logo and the psychedelic Bob Dylan headshot poster, which he did for Dylan's Greatest Hits album in 1966. In 2009, President Barack Obama awarded Glaser the National Arts Prize. To this day, Glaser's work continues to inspire designers.

His Portfolio

Alan Fletcher

As one of the founding partners of Pentagram, Fletcher is considered not only one of the best designers of his generation, but any generation. His career has spanned decades and is an exercise in simplicity, smart thinking, and understatement. His job at London's Victoria and Albert Museum—the world's leading art and architecture museum—looks as amazing today as he did when he first founded it in 1989.

His Projects

If the name looks familiar, you've almost definitely used the Lubalin font at some stage in your career. Herb Lubalin was an excellent artist and typographer who developed many fonts that are still commonly used today. His font styles include ITC Avant Garde, Lubalin Graph, and ITC Serif Gothic. His logo for Mother & Child Magazine is considered to be a masterpiece.
